Welcome to Manic Monday! Every Monday I pick a book and provide a little insight about it from a reader’s perspective. Though it’s Thursday today, I thought I’d still be fair and give a book review (internet issues, my apologies).
Our book for today is my first Filipino book review. Exorcism: Encounters with the Paranormal and the Occult by Fr. Jose Francisco Syquia (Directtor, Archidiocese of Manila Office of Exorcism.
You’d think this book will just straight up explain and tell the exorcism experiences of Fr. Syquia, you’re not alone. I thought it will be a serious events on how a man of religion battles against the forces of evil (I put the “serious” word there because without it, it will sound like a young adult fantasy book).
But Fr. Syquia has surpassed everyone’s expectation and instead, made the reader realize why and how these spirits enter the body.
It’s not like any other novel (or fiction books as this is, in fact, real), you need to pause multiple times to think about what happened – or simplyu reminisce a horror story you might have forgotten a long time ago.
It will describe, it great detail, how some spirits are not really spirits but the devil himself. How some instances will make you question things that are normally tagged as scientific and how some recreational activities are actually a way to open your body for any spirit to enter (spoiler alert! Yoga is one of them. I knew I hated yoga for a reason! )
How I Found It
I don’t know why we had ghosts and demons as subjects of our lunch talk one workday but I’m glad it did. One colleague shared how her previous house was haunted by 2 ghosts (1 old man and 1 kid) and how her previous office was a resident for a notorious doppelganger.
Everyone was sharing a great amount of ghost stories and one girl told us a story of one priest trying to exorcise a girl when the devil tried to tell him some secrets no one knew (this is one of the stories in the book).
I was grinning from ear to ear, visibly amused by the story. She saw my over enthusiastic demeanor and offered to lend me the book.
Why Read it?
- If you like spooking yourself up but bored with the traditional “real” ghost stories (remember True Philippine Ghost Stories series? yeah, those were years of ignorance.), this is the book for you. All stories are real, why would a priest lie, right?
- It’s not how you’d expect a priest to tell stories – biblical quotes and traditional teachings about Jerusalem and stuff. NO, Fr. Syquia will break it down to 1 part narration and 1 part church teachings, effectively marrying both and making sure the reader understand why these events are occurring.
- It will not end in just stories like the usual horror books do, Fr. Syquia will give you methods not only on how to fight the spirits once they’re inside you, but on how to prevent it from happening in the first place.
- This book is a good read during the holy weak where the spirit of the Lord is weakest, it will make you feel like you are battling the forces of evil itself but within.
